How Principals can save Time and Money with a Webcasting Studio

Webcast Studio-Hillview Middle
Administrators have very little time. They have pressing tasks and important communication responsibilities to their students, their staff, the district, and the community. Some have harnessed the power of video for these communication responsibilities. However, most administrators shy away from video because of the hurdles involved:
  • time
  • effort
  • expense
  • know-how
My webcasting solution helps to make up for these pain points.

Time

Clock face and diary pages

A webcast makes communicating to stakeholders faster and more efficient.

One of the biggest complaints about making videos is the amount of time required to shoot, edit, and publish nice-looking videos. This webcasting solution uses Wirecast to allow a student-team to seamlessly transition from nicely edited, pre-recorded student or teacher-generated content to a “talking-head”, live announcement feed, and wrap it all in school-centered branding. The videos can be used internally to communicate with students or staff. They can also be posted to the school website, shared in an email blast for the parent community, or recorded and shared at a board meeting.

My webcast studio package saves an enormous amount of time in the editing space. The system uses Wirecast live-editing software to allow students, teachers, or administrators to quickly create school messaging. Wirecast can even be used for live streaming to classrooms and beyond.

Effort

This system is meant to function as a student-run broadcast. Once the student webcast production team is up and running, an administrator can literally walk on set, deliver an announcement to the camera, and walk off. The team takes care of getting the message branded and sent out.

Expense

Hundred Dollar Bills

The cost of entry into video production is lower than ever.

Several years ago, during my time as a “Tech TOSA”, I supervised the installation of an on-campus video broadcast system. The overall cost pushed close to $30,000. Over $20,000 of that was installing a cable network infrastructure. My webcasting solution utilizes free video streaming to the Internet via the existing network. The cost of entry has dropped below $7,000.Where possible, I have purposely priced and selected off-the-shelf, entry-level equipment for this webcasting solution. As a former teacher, I know schools do not have a lot of extra funding.

Know-how

The system is fairly simple to learn. The set up fee includes a half day training for key staff and allows you to be up and running in no time.

Invitation

Principal Brian Kissel at Ada Harris Elementary has extended a standing invitation to any administrator who would like to come see their broadcast system at work. I would be happy to introduce you and even accompany you to observe this system being used by the Ada Harris Student News production team.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about the system or invitation. Or you can contact Brian through the Ada Harris website.
