How you can make Multi-Camera, Hands-on Demo Videos

This demo is an example of how Wirecast can be used to create tutorial videos by the entrepreneur.

I’m posting about this guitar practicing video I made. This is a sample of a 3-camera, live-edit video that I created using Wirecast. Wirecast is a pretty amazing video platform because you can record multiple cameras and edit on-the-fly. I created the video with two external webcams and the internal FaceTime camera for my MacBook Pro.

Wirecast 2Webcams

I used my MacBook Pro FaceTime camera to capture a front view of my guitar strumming. I mounted one webcam as a medium close of me talking.

I used my mic stand mounted webcam to point directly at my strumming hand which was the focal point of the practice.

Wirecast PIP View

I created the picture-in-picture using the shot editor in Wirecast with the main window showing my strumming hand close-up and the PIP window the front view of my guitar playing. This was meant to allow the student to both see the detail of the strumming as well as the overall look of my forearm beating out time.

The only post production editing I did on this video was in Quicktime… to trim the ends off the the first clip, and cut out a portion of a second clip. Then I added the second clip to the end of the first and exported it.

Note:

I am not a professional guitar player or teacher. I make videos for a living. BUT I have helped several people get started with playing guitar. After a recent guitar coaching session with a friend, he needed practice strumming. This is a basic skill that many beginning guitar players have to work on. It is easier to practice with a model. I thought of a way to use video to support his learning and threw together this quick Wirecast session.

His response, “Wow Cliff, this is super helpful. I think it’s great that you’ve made it in a way that can be helpful to even more people, and you even simplified it down to one chord!”

Do you have a hands-on skill you want to make demo videos about? Please tell me about it in the comments.

Have you tried using Wirecast but got lost or frustrated? Please leave a comment on this post with your pain point. I read every comment and will try to help you if I can.

I’m also available for one-on-one video coach. Do you want some help with Wirecast or other video-production coaching? As a former teacher, it gives me a special sense of satisfaction to see someone take off with a skill I help them develop. We can do a video chat or create a remote session on your computer, so it’s like I am sitting next to you. If you are interested, email me at Cliff@rosamediaproductions.com or fill out the contact form on my site.

As a comment:

It took me a while to get the brightness settings right for the cameras in this view because this is significantly different than my normal webcast set up. But after working in the Webcam Settings app (an essential for external webcam work on the Mac)  for a little while we were good to go. I turned down the brightness and increased the saturation (maybe a little too much judging from my red face).
