The first step to getting better video quality is good sound. An external mic is an essential component.
I’ve linked to some mic options for smartphone videography on Amazon Affiliate store. (Affiliate = I don’t sell these products directly, but I get a commission if people buy via my link. Same price as normal, but ~5% comes my way. This helps me to continue my work and advice helping others with video. 🙂
AT Pro70 w adapter and extension
The Audio Technica Pro70 is the same mic as in my webcast studio package. I use them and have recommended them for several clients. XLR is a quality, low-noise connector. The XLR Jack to iPhone (TRRS) adapter makes it so you can use the XLR mic with a smartphone or tablet. You would want to get the extension cable so you can record from a distance.
RODE SmartLav w extension
The Rode SmartLav+ is a smartphone/tablet external mic solution with the right connector already built-in. Many smartphone videographers swear by it. The one listed here is packaged with an extension that will work fine for a “1 or 2 medium shot”… (Just you in the frame or you and a co-host). If you want more framing flexibility, you will probably need an additional extension for it, as well.
Mono Handheld AudioTechnica Cardiod w extension
Although it is a little bit of an old school look, some people like the host-of-the-show/ news-gathering feel of a handheld mic. It is helpful as a prop sometimes. They are great for collecting quick comments from a “crowd”. And the cardioid mic pattern helps to cut down background noise much more than omni-directional lavalier mics do. A handheld mic will work with your smartphone when you purchase an appropriate adapter.
