Why have a Video Broadcast Studio at my School – Instructional Leadership
One of my favorite things to do when I was still teaching was to set up and run the video broadcast studio at my school. Now I offer the service of setting up video broadcast studios at schools, which you can learn more about
on my studios page.
Why set up a live-streaming, live-editing video broadcast studio on your campus?
Why spend several thousand dollars on equipment and a couple more for me to come set up your studio and train your lead teacher how to use it?
Let me tell you a story:
In the mid 2000’s I worked at a school that was in what was called at the time “program improvement.” We were in the fourth or fifth year of a five-year count down to being taken over by the state if we didn’t get our test scores up. One of those tested areas was reading.
We had an online reading program called AR that had been implemented incorrectly. We were supposed to be emphasizing three goals: Accuracy, Reading Level, and Reading Volume, but our students only knew about points – reading volume.
We had been using a video broadcast studio at my school for about one year at this point so we decided to make a
sharp high-energy explanation video for students (And indirectly the teachers) about The three goals of AR. We started with zero students out of over 600 making all three goals. In the next marking period we had something like eight students making their three goals.
We showed the video almost daily for a while then pretty much on a weekly basis for the following several months. We kept showing that video, excerpts from that video, videos highlighting the three goals achievers, and other videos to encourage students in their accelerated reader achievement.
Guess what started to happen. Students and teachers started paying attention. More and more students started making all three goals.
More and more teachers got motivated to set the three goals for their students. I remember one particular teacher who was, shall we say, headstrong? She was unwilling to change for light and transient reasons. One day I heard her telling a colleague that her students were asking about why they needed to pick a book at their level. This teacher practically quoted the video in the exclamation that she gave the student. It was a moment of personal triumph for me.
Here’s an excerpt from a video at the end of three years showing the growth in the number of students that were making all three goals at the school.
Now I want to bring all this back around to why go to all of the expense and work to put together and maintain a video broadcast studio at my school. It is a way to communicate with all of your students and help to effect real instructional leadership. It helps your leadership team communicate both with the students and the teachers, all at the same time.
If you’d like to learn more about how I can help you get a video broadcast studio put together that will be powerful and reliable. Everything from providing the equipment list to setting the studio up for you to training your staff and if desired your first batch of students to learn how to run it, go to my studios page and you can find more information there.
